Actually Written
Record how the answers in your forms were written. Review recorded submissions at https://actuallywritten.com/submissions.
npm install actually-written
import { track } from "actually-written";
track(document.querySelector("form"), { key: "aw_pk_…" });
Get your public key at https://actuallywritten.com/keys. It is safe to commit.
The SDK sends recordings directly to Actually Written for scoring and review. No custom upload server or provider integration is required.
An optional <div class="actually-written-badge"></div> inside the form shows people that their writing is recorded.
Recording uploads in the background. Native submission, buttons, and navigation remain unchanged.
React
Start tracking on mount and call the returned session.stop() on unmount. If you handle submission yourself, keep the session in a ref and follow the JavaScript instructions below.
JavaScript submissions
Keep the session returned by track(). Call void session.submit() in your existing final-submit handler before resetting or navigating. Keep the existing validation and application-saving logic. Never make form submission depend on recording success.
Uploads retry in the background. Repeated calls to submit() retry the same frozen recording.
Link a recording
Store the hidden actually_written_session field with your application. For JSON payloads, use the current session.id. Calling form.reset() starts a new session for the next application.
Recording delivery
Drafts and new edits upload periodically. A small submission marker is sent independently of pending history. A session is a draft until submitted. The server counts a submission once and assesses the evidence received.
submit() still returns a delivery promise for diagnostics. Do not await it in the form's submission flow. Closing a browser or losing connectivity can leave incomplete evidence; the application still submits normally.
Privacy
Draft answers and edit histories are uploaded while the form is being filled out, including forms that are abandoned. Tell people about recording in your privacy notice. Final answers, behavior counters, and edit histories are retained with the submission. Submission histories are excluded from writing-data training exports.
